Iraqi Sectarianism - Press Statement

Follows is a press release from the Muslim Council of Ireland (President), the European Muslim Council for Justice, Peace and Equality (Chairman), and the International Islamic Leadership Conference (Secretary-General).

I myself did not regard the October statement of the synod of Middle Eastern Bishops positively. This notwithstanding, the following press release is important:

Iraqi Sectarianism - Press Statement

The recent disgusting massacre of dozens of Catholics in Baghdad, and the desecration of their Church by so-called Muslims, has, once again, dragged the name of Islaam through the mud.

Attacking a place of worship and targeting people during their celebration of God is in direct contravention of the message of the Holy Qur-aan, is anti-Islaam and inhuman. The Prophet (pbuh) has condemned such behaviour in the strongest possible terms when he said: "indeed the blood, honour, possessions and life of another are sacred and therefore forbidden to violate". Hence such people cannot be Muslims. Indeed Iran, which has been criticized for its influence in Iraq, has joined with others in the Middle East and has utterly condemned those who carried out the attacks.

Iraq is approximately 97% Muslim and about 3% Christian and other faiths. The Christian community is comprised mainly of the Chaldean Catholic Church (not Roman Catholic but with close links to the Vatican), the Syriac Orthodox Church (one of the most ancient Christian Churches) and the Assyrian Church of the East. Their position is fragile as they are being systematically driven out of Iraq by barbarians masquerading as human beings.

During the month of October the Vatican held a two-week-long synod of Middle Eastern Bishops. It was attended by 200 Christian leaders from the Middle East, including nine Patriarchs from ancient communities and in their concluding statements declared:

"Israel cannot use the biblical concept of a promised land or a chosen people to justify.... territorial claims...."

One Archbishop stated:

"The justification of Israel's occupation of the land of Palestine cannot be based on sacred scriptures."

Such sentiments can only be interpreted as support for the Palestinian people (who comprise Muslims & Christians); and yet within a matter of days the Chaldean Catholic Church in Baghdad is attacked by Al Qaeda affiliates. In a further "irony" the former Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz, recently sentenced to death, is a Chaldean Catholic.

One does not have to be a conspiracy theorist to question the timing of the attack. This attack has murdered innocent men, women & children, has harmed Islaam, has harmed Christian/Islamic relations in the Middle East and has undermined the sentiments expressed by the recent Vatican conference.

Again this reinforces the point that Muslims must repudiate the fanatics, and must repudiate those who seek to manipulate Muslims into giving fanatics tacit support by being silent in the face of their atrocities. I call upon all Muslim leaders of the world to speak up in the face of injustice, whether it is injustice against Muslims, Christians, Jews or any other community.

The Messenger of God who is a prophet of peace and compassion has given us a duty to live a decent life under Allaah. The Baghdad killers and their supporters are enemies of Islaam and enemies of humanity. They must be repudiated and isolated from all decent communities.
