Interparliamentary Conference on Human Rights and Religious Freedom (IPC) | June 22, 2004

Washington, D.C. – Registration is now available for the Second Session of the Interparliamentary Conference on Human Rights and Religious Freedom (IPC), which will take place in Brussels from August 5 through August 7, 2004.

The Interparliamentary Conference on Human Rights and Religious Freedom is composed of members of national and supranational parliaments from around the globe. The unique nature of the Interparliamentary Conference on Human Rights and Religious Freedom allows members of national and supranational parliaments to meet and address the issues of human rights and freedom of religion with common understanding and background as legislators, while in dialogue with religious leaders, NGOs, and others.

The conceptual approach of the Conference stems from the concept that any new and major undertaking of norms and principles related to religious freedom and human rights should be a reflection of the will of common people as expressed in legislative and practical activities of their representatives. A substantial change, whenever necessary, calls for more than a political option, which is always oriented by the interests of the day, a prisoner of the continuous reverberation of particular events, especially in the moral and spiritual realm of small or medium size countries. The tremendous response to the initiative of convening the Conference validated this approach as much as the animated debates and the general tone of mutual respect and intellectual and moral commitment to human rights that characterized its works.

The inaugural session of the Interparliamentary Conference on Human Rights and Religious Freedom in 2003 in Brussels was a remarkable success. It created a new momentum in promoting these two important issues; it adopted a new tone for debating and solving controversial matters; it permitted the free exchange of ideas and concepts among legislators from around the globe; and it provided a clear understanding of an entirely new set of problems that occurred with the historic changes in newly emerging democracies.

We invite you and your colleagues to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity to meet and cooperate with parliamentarians from over 90 countries and to advance directly and effectively religious rights globally.
