THE Haryana State Legal Services Authority is considering the possibility of giving exemption from the remaining term oimprisonment to a prisoner in case he or she wants to join the mainstream by bringing improvement in conduct and behaviour.

This was stated by the Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, while inaugurating a programme to mark the beginning of religious discourses in jails, at Central Jail Ambala today. All judicial and administrative officers, besides 1,200 prisoners, attended the function.

Justice Goel said that besides introducing yoga in jails, arrangements had been made to give religious discourses in the barracks so that the prisoners could bring change in their conduct and thinking. He added that religious discourses would be arranged in all the jails in the state and such a programme was already arranged in the Central Jail of Gurgaon.

Jail Superintendent S.P.S. Chauhan said that, as a first, Ambala Jail had employed prisoners in floriculture. The DC, J.P. Kaushik, also spoke on the occasion and Shri Giananad delivered discourses to mark the beginning of the programme today.

Justice Goel said the doors of improvement and welfare were not closed on a criminal, who could lead a normal life by bringing about a change in his life. He said that prisoners were provided, besides meals and lodging, education and other curricular activities within the jail premises and they could seek legal assistance against exploitation. Justice Goel urged the prisoners to lead the remaining part of their lives by joining the mainstream and become good citizens.
